How to figure cubic feet
Two worked examples, in inches and in centimetres.
- Box in inches
24 × 18 × 12 in = 5,184 in³ - Cubic feet
5,184 ÷ 1,728 = 3 ft³ - Cubic metres
3 ÷ 35.3147 = 0.085 m³ - Box in centimetres
60 × 40 × 40 cm = 0.096 m³ - Cubic feet
0.096 × 35.3147 = 3.39 ft³ - Cubic yards
3 ft³ ÷ 27 = 0.111 yd³
Measure the outside
For shipping, measure the packed box or the loaded pallet at its widest points, including the pallet and any bulge. Carriers charge for the space the outside takes.
Round like the carrier
Many carriers round each dimension up to the next whole inch or centimetre before calculating. The calculator shows the exact figure; round your inputs up if your carrier does.
Cubic feet is not square feet
Square feet measure a floor area (length × width). Cubic feet add the height. A 10 × 10 ft room 8 ft high has 100 ft² of floor and 800 ft³ of space.

Common questions
How do you calculate cubic feet?
Measure length, width and height. If they are in feet, multiply them: the answer is in cubic feet. If they are in inches, multiply them and divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches. A 24 × 18 × 12 in box is 5,184 in³ = 3 ft³.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic metre (CBM)?
35.3147 cubic feet. To convert CBM to CFT multiply by 35.3147; to convert cubic feet to cubic metres divide by 35.3147 or multiply by 0.0283168.
How do I convert cubic inches to cubic feet?
Divide by 1,728. For example 3,456 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 2 ft³.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.
How many cubic feet is a 40 ft container?
About 2,392 ft³ inside a standard 40 ft container (67.7 m³) and about 2,696 ft³ in a 40 ft high cube. A 20 ft holds about 1,172 ft³.
How do I convert cubic feet to pounds?
You need the density of what is inside: weight (lb) = cubic feet × density (lb per ft³). For freight the calculation usually runs the other way: weight ÷ cubic feet = density, which sets the LTL freight class. Use the freight class calculator for that.
