How long does customs clearance take?

When the paperwork is complete, most shipments clear customs within a few hours to two days: express parcels often the same day, air and sea freight usually one to three days after arrival. A document query, unpaid duties or a physical examination can add days or weeks.

What customs clearance is

Every international shipment is declared to customs twice: on export from the origin country and on import at destination. Clearance means the authority has accepted the declaration, any duties and taxes are paid or secured, and the goods are released. A customs broker, or the express carrier acting as one, normally files the import declaration for the importer of record.

Typical clearance times

These are typical ranges once the goods have arrived and the documents are complete. They are not guarantees; they vary by country, port, season and commodity.

Typical customs clearance times by shipment type
Shipment typeTypical clearanceWhat usually slows it down
Express courier parcelSame day to 1 dayLow-value rules, missing recipient tax ID, duties to collect
Postal parcel1 day to 2 weeksPostal customs queues, item 'presented to customs' awaiting checks
Air freight1 to 3 daysLate documents, regulated goods, examinations
Sea freight FCL1 to 3 days after arrivalExams, holds placed before arrival, unpaid duties
Sea freight LCL2 to 5 days after arrivalDeconsolidation at the warehouse before clearance
Goods needing permitsDays to weeksFood, medical, chemical and controlled goods need agency approval

Why shipments get held

  • Documents do not match. Quantities, weights or values differ between the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading.
  • Vague descriptions or wrong HS codes. 'Parts' or 'samples' without detail invites questions.
  • Undervaluation. Values that look too low for the goods are a classic trigger for checks.
  • Duties and taxes not paid. Many parcels wait until the receiver pays.
  • Inspection. Some shipments are chosen for an X-ray or physical exam; the exam and its fees add time.
  • Restricted goods. Batteries, food, cosmetics, plants and wood packaging may need extra certificates (for wood see ISPM 15).

How to clear faster

  1. Send the commercial invoice and packing list before the goods arrive, and check every total matches. The invoice and packing list generator totals them for you.
  2. Describe goods plainly (material, use) and give the HS code.
  3. Give the receiver's tax or importer number where the country requires it.
  4. Agree who pays duties (see DAP vs DDP) so nobody waits for payment.
  5. For US ocean imports, make sure the Importer Security Filing (ISF) was lodged at least 24 hours before loading at origin.
Prepare matching documentsCommercial invoice and packing list with every total worked out.

Common questions

How long does customs clearance take?

Usually a few hours to two days once the goods have arrived and the paperwork is complete. Express parcels often clear the same day; a document query or inspection can add days or weeks.

What does 'import customs clearance completed' mean?

Customs at the destination has released the shipment. The carrier can now deliver it; any duties were either paid or will be collected on delivery.

How long can a package stay in customs?

It depends on the country. Unclaimed goods are typically held for a limited period, often a few weeks, before being returned, abandoned or destroyed, so respond quickly to any request from the carrier or customs.

Why is my package stuck in customs?

Most often missing or inconsistent paperwork, unpaid duties, a description customs cannot classify, or a random inspection. The carrier or broker usually contacts the receiver for what is needed.

What does 'handed over by customs' mean?

Customs has finished its checks and passed the shipment back to the carrier or postal operator for delivery.
