How many pallets fit on a 53 ft trailer?

A 53 ft dry van takes 26 standard 48 × 40 in pallets loaded straight (48 in side along the trailer, two across) and 30 loaded turned (40 in side along the trailer). Double stacked, that is 52 or 60, if the pallets are short and light enough. The usual limit is weight: roughly 42,000–45,000 lb of cargo in the US.

The trailer is about 100 in wide, so two pallets fit side by side either way: two 40 in faces (80 in) or two 48 in faces (96 in).

Weight usually decides

In the US the usual gross vehicle limit on interstate highways is 80,000 lb. A tractor and empty 53 ft trailer weigh roughly 35,000 lb, which leaves about 42,000–45,000 lb of cargo. Spread over 30 pallets that is under 1,500 lb each, so heavy pallets fill the weight long before the floor. Axle weights must also be balanced.

Double stacking

Two pallets fit in the 108–110 in height only if each is under about 54 in including the pallet, and the bottom loads must carry the top ones without crushing. Many shippers forbid it for fragile goods.

Trailers vs containers

A 53 ft trailer holds more pallets than a 40 ft container (20 US pallets) because it is longer and about 2.5 in wider inside. When cargo moves from an ocean container to a truck at destination, the pallet count is set by the container.
